Born in Montreal in 1975, Katrin Leblond graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1996 and soon thereafter moved to New York to take up an internship with a local fashion designer.

Upon completion of her internship, Katrin returned to Montreal in 2000 and spent the next year working as a textile designer for Tricots Liesse, a major North American knitting mill.  This work experience allowed her to expand her technical skills and acquire proficiency in repeats, textures, stripes and colouring.

Spurred by her newfound love of high end knits, Katrin decided to gain grounding in fashion basics and enrolled at Lasalle College in Montreal to study sewing and patternmaking.  At the same time, with the aim of broadening her artistic range, she studied jewellery design at l`Ecole de Joaillerie de Montréal, and, with a view to opening her own business, she took night courses in Small Business Management at Concordia University.

In 2002, Katrin began working for Télio & Cie.  As a sales representative and merchandiser for the company’s fashion fabrics division, Katrin handled a wide range of beautiful and original fabrics and became acquainted with many of Quebec`s leading designers.  This experience kindled her desire to move away from textiles and led to her decision to channel her artistic and technical skills into fashion design.

Beginning in 2003, Katrin worked as a freelance designer creating costumes for dancers and circus performers.  For a private Cirque du Soleil party, she created a series of orchid dresses with huge flower petals and bird costumes with bustles and intricate feather appliqués.  For a piece about Susan Sontag she cut apart vintage garments and re-sewed them into deconstructionist, feminist, monochromatic costumes for 5 dancers.

Having long dreamed of starting her own business, Katrin was finally able to achieve this ambition in January 2004, when she co-founded Fairyesque Inc., a fashion design company producing whimsical women’s wear.  At Fairyesque, she co-designed four spring and three fall collections.  This range of colourful, imaginative, contemporary clothing in easy care fabrics was presented at both Montreal and Toronto Fashion Week, the Salon des Métiers d`Art in Montreal, the One-of-a-Kind Show in Toronto, and was sold to 41 retailers across Canada and the United States.  In October 2006, she sold her share of the company to launch her own designer label: Katrin Leblond Design.

Katrin Leblond`s clothes are recognizable for her artistic use of colour as well as the romantic but determinedly contemporary nature of her styles.  A lover of beauty in all its manifestations, both natural and man made, Katrin vehemently challenges the “ugly art”   movement with her determination to adorn and decorate, appliqué and embellish.  Her openly passionate approach is rendered with a profound respect for the arts and crafts traditions.  Ribbons are often made by hand cutting strips of fabric and hemming the edges one at a time.  Sequins are hand sewn, and Svarovski crystals applied individually.  Katrin illustrates her own silkscreen prints and has even been known to hand paint scenery directly onto a finished garment. 

2007 saw  the birth of a Katrin Leblond Design boutique featuring her limited edition women’s fashions and her new collection of pure cotton bedding in fabulous prints  Fans of her colourful, light-hearted and youthful Fairyesque fashions will find much to please them in her new range of one-of-a-kind designs, and newcomers will delight in discovering a truly original creative spirit.

Née à Montréal en 1975, Katrin Leblond obtient son Baccalauréat en beaux arts de l`Université Concordia.  En 1996, elle devient stagiaire auprès d`une designer de mode à New York.

Ayant terminé son stage, Katrin revient à Montreal en 2000 comme designer de textiles chez Tricots Liesse, un des plus importants manufacturiers de tricots en Amérique du Nord.  Cette expérience pratique lui permet d`approfondir ses compétences techniques et de maîtriser les répétitions, les textures, les rayés et la coloration.

Inspirée par les tissus haut de gamme, elle decide d`apprendre les fondements de la création de mode et s`inscrit au Collège Lasalle, où elle étudie la couture et le patron.  En même temps, afin d`élargir son éventail artistique elle étudie la bijouterie à l`École de Joaillerie de Montréal, et, en préparation au lancement de sa propre entreprise, elle s'inscrit a l`Université Concordia  pour y suivre des cours de gestion d`affaires.

En 2002 elle devient représentante des ventes à la division des tissus de mode de Télio & Cie, ce qui lui fait connaitre les meilleurs designers du Québec.  Ce contact éveille en elle le désir d`aller au-delà des simples tissus, et l`amène a se réorienter vers le design de mode.

A partir de 2003, Katrin se met à travailler à son propre compte et crée des costumes por danseurs et artistes de cirque. Pour une soirée privée au cirque du soleil elle crée des robes orchidées ornées de gigantesques pétales et des costumes oiseaux décorés d`une abondance de plumes bariolées.  Pour un spéctacle de danse sur Susan Sontag elle défait une série de vêtements des années `70 qu`elle transforme en costumes monochromes, féministes et déconstructionistes.

C`est en Janvier 2004 qu`elle réalise son rêve en fondant sa propre entreprise de design de mode, Fairyesque Inc.  Elle y collabore à la conception de 4 collections de printemps et de trois collections d`automne.  Ces collections de vétements colorés et faciles d`entretien, de style à la fois fantasque et contemporain, sont présentées aux Semaines de la Mode de Montréal et de Toronto, au Salon des Métiers d’Art du Québec, et se vendent chez 41 détaillants canadiens et américains.  Katrin quitte Fairyesque pour fonder sa propre ligne sous l’étiquette Katrin Leblond Design.

Les créations de Katrin Leblond se distinquent par son utilisation artistique des couleurs, et par leur style à la fois romantique  et résolument contemporain.  Passionnée par la beauté sous toutes ses formes, Katrin valorise les ornements, la décoration, les appliqués et tout embellissement, dans le respect des traditions des Métiers d’Art.

2007 à vu la naissance d’une boutique Katrin Leblond, offrant sa nouvelle mode féminine et une collection de literie aux imprimés fabuleux.  Les admiratrices de ses vétements Fairyesque colorés et amusants seront conquises pas sa nouvelle collection dont l`originalité et la fantaisie feront certainement une foule de nouvelles adeptes.

Katrin Leblond, Jahrgang 1975, ist gebuertige Montrealerin. Sie studierte Kunst und Kunstgeschichte in Montreal, und ging nach Abschluss ihres Studiums als Praktikantin der Modeschoepferin Katherine Shakelford nach New York. Anschliessend arbeitete sie als Textildesignerin in Montreal fuer Tricot Liesse, einem der groessten nordamerikanischen Strick-und Wirkwarenhersteller. Dort erwarb sie ihre technischen Fachkenntnisse in den Bereichen: Mustergestaltung, Gewebestruktur, Streifen und Faerben.

Ihre Begeisterung fuer kunstvolle Stoffe fuehrte sie dazu, Naehen und Schnittmustertechnik am Lasalle College zu erlernen. Gleichzeitig studierte sie Schmuckdesign an der Montrealer Fachschule fuer Schmuckgestaltung, und belegte Abendkurse in Betriebswirtschaft an der Concordia Universitaet.

Mit 25 nahm sie eine Stellung bei der Firma Télio&Co. in der Abteilung fuer Verkauf und Merchandising von Modestoffen an. Durch ihre Begegnung mit bekannten Quebecker Modeschoepfern wurde sie angeregt, selbst Mode zu entwerfen – ein konsequenter Schritt nach jahrelanger Taetigkeit im Textilbereich.

Katrin Leblonds Entwuerfe zeichnen sich aus durch raffinierte Farbkombinationen, sowie durch ihren eigenwilligen Stil, einer Mischung aus Romantik und betont modernem Chic.  Die Suche nach harmonischer Schoenheit in all ihren Ausdrucksformen liegt ihr am Herzen. Sie lehnt “unschoene” Kunstrichtungen entschieden ab bei ihrem bewussten Bemuehen zu schmuecken und zu dekorieren, zu verzieren und zu verschoenern.  Ihre schwungvolle Kreativitaet geht Hand in Hand mit tiefempfundener Bewunderung fuer kuenstlerische und kunstgewerbliche Traditionen.

2007 sah die Eroeffnung einer Boutique in Montreal unter dem Namen KATRIN LEBLOND DESIGN. Das neue Konzept ist eine Mischung aus exklusiver Mode fuer die Frau von heute, sowie einer innovativen Kollektion phantasievoll bedruckter Bettwaesche aus reiner Baumwolle.  Kenner und Liebhaber des farbenpraechtigen, verspielten Fairyesque-Stils werden an diesem neuen Angebot einzigartiger Modelle ihre Freude haben, und neue Kunden werden mit Vergnuegen eine wahrhaft originelle und kreative Designerin entdecken.
